OUR MATERIALS

We place great value in our materials. Whether it's a classic natural leather Arizona sandal or a warm and cosy Wool Felt Boston clog, it all starts with our carefully-selected and high-quality materials from sustainable sources.

FOOTBED

The original BIRKENSTOCK footbed is made of natural cork, latex, jute and suede. These are all high-quality, renewable natural materials that come from sustainable sources. They are bonded together in an elaborate production process to ensure their positive natural qualities are maintained.

Suede

A softly buffed full-grained leather, forms the top layer of our footbed. This flexible lining nestles up gently to the curves of your foot, allowing for a more comfortable experience. What's more is its superior breathability offers a perfect climate for your foot.

Jute

A natural resource which adds stability to the cork and latex core. The moisture-wicking fibres provide a sturdy structure above and below the core cork-latex, allowing your feet to have a more enjoyable time in our footbed.

Natural cork

A renewable resource from the outer bark of the Cork Oak which regrows every 7-10 years. The actual cork that forms the body of our footbed comes from left-overs from the production of wine corks. Cork is highly elastic, has excellent cushioning and offers optimal insulation against the heat and cold.
